Moldslug - Interview

Interview recorded 03/16/2025
Kathy: Hello! Welcome to Katy’s Post... today we are interviewing a very special guest… everyone welcome Moldslug! Hi, how are you doing?
Moldslug: Heyyy, I’m good! I’m super excited and looking forward to this interview! I’ve never been interviewed before so this is pretty new! How are you, Kathy?
Kathy: I’m doing good, thank you. Very honoured to have you here today!
Q: You are a Chilean producer, composer and visual artist. Your intricate sound combines acoustic instruments with glitchy textures, creating a mix of the analog, natural world and the digital, artificial one. Who inspired you to create music? And where did discover your influence in finding your sound?
A: My biggest inspiration is definitely Marina Herlop. She’s a Catalan artist who makes music that combines nature and technology beautifully. I think it’s pretty obvious and pretty clear in my music and visuals that this has been my main idol during the creation of "MOLDSLUG", my debut EP under Moldslug.
Q: Something that really intrigued me was your name “Moldslug”. Where does it comes from? Is there a meaning behind it?
A: Well, the story is pretty random. The words "slug" and "mold" just sounded good in that moment, but then I realized that the combination was pretty interesting and aesthetically pleasing for me, mold can be colorful and have intricate patterns, while a slug can produce a slimy mucus that can look almost iridescent. So, essentially, "Moldslug" is just a spontaneous word that I came up with and just remained there the whole time.
Kathy: That’s so cool! Such a unique name too.
Q: Going back to your music… 1 month ago you released your debut EP "MOLDSLUG". I listened to it and I was very impressed! My favorite song off it is “Libel”. What were your ideas behind this EP? And were there some artists who inspired you in the making of it?
A: Thank you! My personal favorite is also "Libel", lol. I could say that the creation of this EP took a pretty long time, not because I just took my time while making the songs, but because a lot of the songs were abandoned demos. On February of 2024, I made the first demo of "Snail", "Taran" and "Libel", but then just kind of forgot about them. Then, later that year, I found them again and decided to try and revive them. I then kind of got obsessed and began making and making other stuff, lol. The artist I had in mind while working on this project was definitely Marina Herlop, but I also drew inspiration from the song "Water" by Lotic in the making of "Libel". In the more meaningful sense, this EP didn’t really have any real meaning behind it at first, but then I realized I just started making a whole story in my head about the life cycle of a creature called Moldslug, which kind of resonated with my own life experiences, worries and goals.
Kathy: That’s very interesting! Loved the whole EP!
Q: Indeed, while listening to it something that I noticed was that each song had a unique name. Is there a meaning behind every song? Does the tracklist represent a journey Into this project?
A: Yes! Each song title has an aesthetic meaning and a meaning in the story. I decided to divide them into two parts, the first one being the aesthetic and more vain part, and the second one being the deeper meaning each song had in the EP’s story. The second parts are pretty obvious, being "Limbo", "Birth", "Doubt", "Fight", "Morph", "Peace", and "Death"; a clear representation of the character’s life cycle and internal fight with themselves. The first part are more abstract and essentially just represent how each song sounds to me. For example, "Libel" comes from Libélula, meaning dragonfly in English, because to me the strings sounded like a dragonfly flying. But yeah, the first parts of the titles are kind of just translations of each songs’ sound.
Kathy: That's very beautiful!
Q: Talking about your production. You had the opportunity to remix “primera vez” by QLOUD. Can you tell us more about how did this remix happen? Did QLOUD contact you to remix her song? What was her reaction to your remix?
A: Of course! This remix was a pretty spontaneous project, actually. I was just scrolling on TikTok and a video of QLOUD promoting "primera vez" came up and I thought, "Wow, she’s pretty cool", and just decided to make a remix of it. I then finished it and hit her up, she replied pretty quickly and she loved it. Then I uploaded it publicly on my YouTube channel and yep! That’s pretty much the whole story behind it. She’s super sweet and talented. She complimented me so much when I sent her the remix, I felt pretty confident about it, too. It was a great and exciting experience!
Kathy: That’s incredible! Love to see that she praised your work
Q: This has been a question I always ask every artists that I interview. Is there someone that you would love to collaborate with in the future? Maybe a dream collaboration of yours?
A: Wow, that’s a hard one, lol. My first option would definitely be Arca, she is AMAZING and super talented. She is actually the artist that got me into experimental music, her mixtape "@@@@@" was my artistic awakening, lol. I love her style and I respect her so much for being a trans Latina woman who started as an independent artist. She is my biggest inspiration when it comes to my whole music career and identity. Obviously, there are MANY artists who I would LOVE to collaborate with but she is just my top choice forever.
Kathy: Very beautiful, love Arca she’s such an amazing artist! [My favorite even]
Q: Besides Moldslug you have other projects too such as "BLSD/CRSD". As stated by you this is your “noise project”, where you use the DAW program Audacity to create glitchy, aggressive, and often jarring scream-like sounds. Can you tell us more about this project and your inspiration on creating it?
A: Yes! BLSD/CRSD was the first project under 1X Recordings, the label I founded and own. I got into noise music after discovering artists such as Masonna, Merzbow, and Prurient. I had discovered how to make noise effects on Audacity a long time ago but never thought of making a whole project out of it. Making noise is such an interesting and entertaining experience in my opinion. It’s mainly about just discovering new sounds and figuring out other techniques. Though my new since under BLSD/CRSD, "Radharc", is a lot less aggressive and is more meditational. I’m thinking of making a more drone, calm project for BLSD/CRSD.
Q: You released your debut album “SHARPAIN” via BLSD/CRSD. This album features this distinctive sound and the album title being a combination of sharp and pain, alluding to the nature of the music. What was the process of creating this album? And what were your biggest influences in the making of it?
A: The process of creating SHARPAIN was pretty fast; I made all the songs in one week, I’m pretty sure. It was super fun though! Making noise is like being alone in a room and just letting your body do whatever it wants. My influences during the making of this album were practically no one, since you’re not completely in control of what the music is going to come out like. It was pretty liberating having in mind how aggressive this album sounds, lol.
Q: After SHARPAIN you have been teasing your second studio album with the release of the single "Radharc". Can you tell us more about this upcoming album and what can we expect from it?
A: Yes! Radharc is the opening to my next album under BLSD/CRSD. You can expect a much more stripped back version of B/C; more calm yet eerie sounds. There are going to be noise, drone, and even vocal pieces! Currently, the title is going to be "PH/RM/NT/SY", which comes from the made up word "pharmantasy", the combination of the prefix "pharma-", meaning drug, medicine or remedy, and the word "fantasy", alluding to the trance-like state that occurs after you consume that unknown substance.
Kathy: So cool! Thanks for giving us more information about this new project!
Q: Besides your music, you are a visual artist too. Indeed I had the opportunity to see some of your works and I was very pleased to see your beautiful paintings. What draws the inspiration for you to create art and what does art mean for you? Does it have a meaning in your music too? Is there a connection between the two?
A: Thank you so much! Art has always been a part of my life; I’ve been drawing since I can remember. My current art depicts humanoid creatures in pain/suffering. I like to call these the "twisted ones", alluding to their deformed bodies. These creatures might seem like a representation of my own mental pain or trauma, but in reality, when I draw these creatures I feel filled with inspiration and excitement! I love drawing and I often feel like my art isn’t valid just because I may not be going through something while creating it, but I’ve realized that art is there to be interpreted by others, which I think is what I want people to do with my work.
Kathy: Exactly! And I was very impressed! Love your artwork
Q: Going back to the topic about your projects; 1X Recordings is your indie record label that you founded nearly a year ago. How does it feel being the owner of 1X Recordings? How is the record label doing? And how does it feel seeing many new artists applying to it?
A: 1X Recordings! Yes, my beloved label. Being the owner of something that is growing at such a fast pace is exciting yet scary! Sometimes I feel like I might have to stop things because there are to many things to handle, but currently, the label is perfectly fine and balanced. Seeing so much people interested in this project is super flattering and heartwarming! I love seeing people actually interested in joining this community and I’m so grateful for all the people here. Though, I hate to say, applications are unfortunately closing! Very, very soon. They will be closed until further notice, so sorry for all the people that didn’t get to apply! But let me tell you that it will not be like this forever. I cannot even imagine just closing this door to other independent artists forever. So, don’t worry, 1X Recordings applications will be open again someday.
Kathy: That’s very beautiful! I have some friends of mine who are signed to it and I can’t wait to see what they will do!
Q: When you created 1X Recordings, what was the meaning behind it? What was the purpose of this label? And were there artists that surprised you when you saw them apply?
A: 1X has alwaysbeen about casually supporting small artists like me, but I realized it has opened doors to incredibly talented people. I’ve met the best friends out of this label. I’m honored to be the one who helped other small creators get their music out there. I was SO in shock when some artists applied, because I had been a big fan of their work for a long time. I’m super excited to see their growth and listen to their new music!
Q: And lastly, 1X besides being a record label feels like a big family too, what is your relation with each member of 1X? You all seem very close to each other and I see lots of support to each individual artist, which is very beautiful.
A: Yes! I’m friends with most of the members, lol. We all talk frequently and share our music, thoughts on music, etc. I’d loved to be friends with other artists but just haven’t because I’m scared! I’m a pretty introverted person so sometimes making friends just seems like a massive deal to me, lol. But I hope one day I make some type of group chat with every artist under 1X!
Kathy: Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to interview you! Wishing you all the best with your music journey and with your record label! ♡
Moldslug: Thank to you! I loved this experience and I feel a bit more confident and comfortable in doing interviews now! I wish you the best luck in all your projects, Kathy!
